Our approach to couples and family therapy combines the following practices:
Gottman Method for couples is a highly structured and goal-oriented type of therapy. Will focus on techniques to increase affection, closeness and respect. This style of couples’ therapy emphasizes conflict management rather than conflict resolution. Couples are asked to create a higher sense of empathy and understanding. Therapists use tools such as building love maps, create shared dreams and meaning, and work on trust and commitment.
Insight Oriented Couples Therapy is a style of therapy where your therapist will closely examine, collect and analyze you and your partner’s style of interacting and communication. An interpretation of the problem is given through developmental and attachment theory. The therapist helps each partner understand past issues of one another’s possible unmet emotional needs.
Narrative Couples and Family Therapy offers a perspective of separating people/the couple from their problem and looking at the issue more externally. The goal is to create more nonjudgmental and meaningful exchanges, which help couples and families feel closer by reconnecting through their strengths.
Psychodynamic & Psychoanalytic theory examines how the past influences the present, through many past family of origin issues. This style emphasizes bringing insight and discussion into unconscious issues, to change perception and behavior.
Family Systems Therapy examines the family as a whole system, where individual family members are playing roles that intertwine their relationships to create a problem that is universal among the family. Family members’ roles are acted, felt, and discussed to see the cause and effect among different members and resolve the issue as a whole group.
